Pointe work – When can I go on my toes?
Students need to have studied classical ballet for at least 5 years, attending classes for a minimum of 2 classes per week, to achieve the required standard before the commencement of pointe work can begin. This is generally after passing and completing the Cecchetti grade 5 examination or approximately age 12. The body must have achieved sufficient strength along with correct body alignment to safely cope with the extra workload added by pointe work.
Eligible students must undergo an assessment by a qualified physiotherapist to ensure a student can safely go on their toes where a series of strengthening exercises will be recommended if required.
Where possible your teacher will attend your first pointe shoe fitting to ensure the most suitable pointe shoe is purchased.
